Tui Reports UK Summer Sales Decline

Tui, Europe's largest travel operator, reported a 10% decrease in summer holiday booking revenue from UK customers, attributed to increased caution stemming from the Iran conflict. This decline, announced four hours ago, reflects a broader trend of consumers booking closer to departure dates and shifting demand from Eastern to Western Mediterranean destinations.

The company is adjusting its operational capacity in response, reducing the number of seats purchased from airline partners by 4-5% for the summer season, while maintaining its proprietary flight schedule. This strategic reduction aims to align capacity with evolving booking patterns and mitigate potential impacts from geopolitical tensions affecting fuel markets.

Financially, Tui recorded a 40 million euro (34.7 million pounds) hit to profits in the first three months of the year due to the Middle East conflict, encompassing repatriation costs, welfare expenses, and lost income. The company reported an underlying loss before interest and tax of 188 million euros for the quarter, an improvement from the 207 million euro loss in the same period last year. Overall, Tui observed a 7% year-on-year fall in total summer booking revenue.
