Hantavirus Outbreak on Antarctic Cruise Ship A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, has resulted in three passenger deaths and multiple illnesses since April 11, 2026. The Dutch-flagged luxury cruise ship, which offers Antarctic and Arctic voyages, is currently positioned off the coast of Cape Verde, approximately 400 miles west of Senegal, asourceser its scheduled docking on Monday.

The incident began with the death of a Dutch national on April 11 in the Atlantic Ocean. His wife subsequently died asourceser returning home, and a German passenger died aboard the ship on Saturday. A fourth passenger, a British national, was medically evacuated to a South African hospital and is in intensive care with confirmed hantavirus. Additionally, two crew members, one British and one Dutch, have developed acute respiratory symptoms requiring urgent medical attention.

Hantavirus, primarily spread through contact with rodent excretions, has a high case fatality rate, particularly the Andes virus strain which can be transmitted human-to-human. While hantavirus is rare in the Americas, it is more common in Asia and Europe with varying fatality rates. The specific strain affecting the MV Hondius remains undetermined, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause and mechanism of the outbreak on the vessel.
