Structural Imbalances Persist Despite Diplomatic Thaw in India-China Relations

The bilateral relationship between India and China remains constrained by widening structural divergences, despite a recent diplomatic thaw and the restoration of patrolling rights in Ladakh. While high-level engagement has resumed, the military and economic power gap between the two nations has expanded significantly since 2020.

India’s military posture has shifted toward a defensive orientation, struggling to maintain deterrence parity as its defense industrial ecosystem faces procurement delays and aging equipment. Conversely, China has accelerated its military modernization, notably increasing the production rate of fifth-generation fighter aircraft. This asymmetry complicates New Delhi’s ability to project power or maintain a credible two-front deterrence strategy.

Economic dependencies have also deepened, undermining India’s efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese capital and technology. Recent Chinese export controls on critical components have exposed vulnerabilities in India’s manufacturing sector, threatening production continuity in key industries. These structural challenges suggest that diplomatic normalization remains limited, as India continues to navigate a precarious security environment characterized by increased economic coercion and a skewed regional power balance.
