Quantum computing companies experienced notable stock movements on December 1, 2020, following the U.S. Department of Energy's announcement of $625 million in funding for quantum information science research centers. This federal investment, spread across five centers over five years, aims to advance quantum computing, sensing, and networking technologies. The funding initiative was established under Quantum Initiative Act, signed into law in 2018.

Specifically, shares of IonQ, a quantum computing hardware and software company, rose by 1.6% to $10.04. Rigetti Computing, another quantum hardware developer, saw its stock increase by 2.3% to $1.33. D-Wave Quantum, which specializes in annealing quantum computers, also experienced a gain, with its shares climbing 1.9% to $1.07. These movements reflect investor response to increased government support for the sector.

The Department of Energy's allocation of funds is directed towards national laboratories and their academic and industry partners. This strategic investment is intended to accelerate the development of quantum technologies, potentially benefiting companies involved in the quantum ecosystem. The funding is part of a broader effort to maintain U.S. leadership in advanced computing fields.
