Philadelphia Garage Collapse: 1 Dead, 2 Missing

A partial collapse at a parking garage under construction for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia left one person dead and two others unaccounted for on Wednesday, according to city officials. Emergency responders were called to the 3000 block of Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood at about 2:16 p.m., where crews began pulling people from debris at the worksite.

Officials said three individuals were rescued from the rubble after the incident. One construction worker later died from injuries at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Two other workers were treated and then released, officials said.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson said the seven-story structure remains unstable, which has slowed and complicated efforts to locate the two missing individuals. He said engineers are at the scene to evaluate the building’s condition, and that the site will need to be carefully taken apart to reduce risk to firefighters and other emergency personnel involved in the operation.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said the search-and-rescue response is continuing. Officials have not provided additional details on the identities of those missing, and the timeline for reaching all areas of the structure remains uncertain due to the reported instability.

Authorities said a subcontractor was working on the installation of precast concrete flooring, decking, and roofing segments when the collapse occurred. Officials also said that three of the five workers affected were members of Ironworkers Union Local 401.

The incident adds to scrutiny around safety conditions at large construction projects, particularly those involving heavy prefabricated components and multi-level structures. While officials have not described a cause, the presence of engineers on-site and the need for controlled deconstruction underscore the technical and operational challenges that can follow a structural failure during active construction.
