San Francisco police arrested a 20-year-old suspect on Friday, April 10, 2026, after an early-morning incident at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and a separate threat reported at OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco, according to officials and the company.

Authorities said officers responded at about 4:12 a.m. PT to a fire investigation at a North Beach residence where an incendiary device had been used. Officials described the device as a Molotov cocktail thrown at the home, which damaged an exterior gate. Police said no injuries were reported, and the suspect left the area on foot.

Police said a second call followed shortly afterward. At approximately 5:07 a.m. PT, officers were dispatched to a business on the 1400 block of 3rd Street, identified as OpenAI’s headquarters, after a report that a male subject was threatening to burn down the building. Officials said officers identified and detained the suspect and linked him to both the North Beach incident and the later threat at the company site.

OpenAI confirmed the events and said no one was harmed. The company said it appreciated the rapid response by the San Francisco Police Department and added that it is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues. Police said charges are pending.

The incidents come as major technology companies and high-profile executives face heightened attention around physical security, particularly in large urban centers where corporate offices and private residences can be in close proximity.

In market terms, such events can raise operational and security considerations for firms with prominent public profiles, including potential impacts on workplace access, staffing protocols, and coordination with local authorities, though officials did not describe any disruption to operations in this case.

For global investors and policymakers tracking the artificial intelligence sector, the episode underscores the real-world security dimension surrounding leading AI organizations. OpenAI is a widely watched company in global technology markets, and any threats involving its leadership or facilities can draw attention from stakeholders focused on business continuity and risk management. However, officials reported no injuries, and the company said it is working with police as the inquiry proceeds.

Key details remain unresolved. Police have not announced specific charges, and officials have not publicly described a motive. The investigation is ongoing, and further information is expected as authorities determine the full sequence of events and any additional legal steps.
