Türkiye Marks Decade Since Failed Coup

Türkiye marked the tenth anniversary of the July 15, 2016, failed coup attempt, citing the event as a catalyst for a decade of significant geopolitical and economic transformation. The government credits the resilience of its institutions and public support for stabilizing the nation, which has since expanded its diplomatic network to 264 missions, currently the third-largest globally.

Economic indicators show sustained growth, with 2025 exports reaching $273 billion and projections exceeding $400 billion for 2026. GDP per capita has surpassed $19,000, supported by a tourism sector that attracted 64 million visitors in 2025, ranking the country fourth globally. These gains have been accompanied by a shift toward humanitarian leadership, with Türkiye currently ranking first in humanitarian aid as a percentage of GDP.

The defense sector has emerged as a primary driver of strategic autonomy, with an R&D budget nearing $3 billion and a project portfolio exceeding $100 billion. Domestic production now accounts for over 80 percent of defense requirements. Recent advancements include the unveiling of the Yildirimhan intercontinental ballistic missile and the continued dominance of Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles, which currently represent 65 percent of the global export market for such systems.
