Jining, China, launched the 2026 China International Confucius Cultural Festival and the 2026 Nishan Forum on World Civilizations on September 28. Held in Qufu, Shandong province, the events drew scholars, officials, and visitors from nearly 60 countries and regions, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Confucian thought.

The dual events underscore sustained global interest in the teachings of Confucius, who lived from 551–479 BC. Jining, recognized as Confucius's hometown, serves as a significant center for Confucian culture, housing the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius.

Cultural Festival Celebrates Heritage

The Confucius Cultural Festival, running from September 28 to October 7, operates under the theme, "Benevolence and Rituals for a World of Shared Harmony." The opening ceremony took place at the Confucius Research Institute, followed by a memorial ceremony. Activities include a "Follow Confucius" study tour, a national instrumental music exhibition along the Grand Canal, and a Confucius culture temple fair in Qufu's ancient city. The festival also offers study courses on Confucian rites and the six classical arts, alongside eight new cruise routes on the Grand Canal connecting Qufu's heritage to the sea.

Nishan Forum Explores Global Governance

Established in 2010, the Nishan Forum functions as a key platform for inter-civilizational dialogue. This year's theme, "Civilization, Order, Justice," encompasses four sub-topics: the contemporary value of Confucianism, civilizational resilience and global governance, cross-cultural dialogue, and artificial intelligence (AI) and universal harmony.

AI Ethics in Focus

The forum's session on AI garnered particular attention. Liu Hao, deputy director of the Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies, stated that "Technology is never just a tool; it is a key variable shaping future civilizations." Experts, including Tsinghua University's Xue Lan, discussed how Confucian principles like benevolence could provide ethical guidance for global AI governance frameworks. Over 200 scholars attended the forum, with approximately 100 from overseas. International Olympic Committee Honorary President Thomas Bach delivered a video address, and UNESCO representative Edmond Moukala provided a keynote speech.

Economic Impact on Cultural Tourism

Jining leverages these events to boost its cultural tourism sector. The city launched 18 new study tour routes and introduced over 60 new visitor experiences, integrating AI and augmented reality (AR) technologies to enhance engagement with its historical sites.
