Japan's Nikkei Reaches Record High

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock index reached an all-time high on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, surpassing 68,000 points for the first time. This 3 percent increase reflects a global surge in investor interest driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

The benchmark index's performance contributes to a nearly 33 percent gain for Japan's stock market in 2026. This growth is attributed to strong demand for high-end semiconductor components, benefiting Japanese manufacturers. A weakened yen has also provided a tailwind for the market.

Leading the gains were semiconductor-related firms. Tokyo Electron, a major semiconductor equipment manufacturer, saw a 14 percent rise in morning trading. Advantest, a supplier of testing equipment, increased by over 5.5 percent, while Shin-Etsu Chemical, a silicon wafer supplier, gained approximately 4 percent. Softbank, with significant investments in AI, experienced a 3 percent decline after briefly becoming Japan's largest company by market capitalization on Monday.
