IRGC says tanker explodes near Hormuz mine route
Iranian officials said a crude carrier caught fire after hitting mines, adding a new supply risk around the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's IRGC navy said one supertanker exploded after hitting naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz, putting crude shipments through the waterway under fresh risk. Reaction pending.
Officials said the crude-carrying vessel was trying to leave the strait through an unauthorized route with navigation and GPS systems switched off. They said the tanker caught fire after the blast, and described the route as high-risk.
Hormuz route dispute widens
The IRGC navy also said its forces struck a liquefied petroleum gas carrier identified as NV Sunshine on Friday as it tried to cross south of the waterway through what officials called an illegal route. Officials said the vessel's engine room and propulsion system caught fire.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most sensitive crude transit points, linking Gulf producers with global energy markets. Any verified disruption there would feed first into freight, insurance and prompt crude pricing before moving through refined products and inflation expectations.
Iranian officials blamed the US military for rising maritime tensions and said action against vessels using unauthorized routes would no longer be limited to the Strait of Hormuz. President Masoud Pezeshkian separately said Thursday that Iran would keep negotiating with the United States through mediators, while accusing Washington of attacking Iran twice during earlier talks.
By October 12, the immediate test is whether ship-tracking data, vessel operators or naval authorities confirm damage, casualties or traffic restrictions.
If the passage stays open, the commodity effect may center on risk premiums; if insurers or operators reroute vessels, the pressure would move to shipping costs and crude delivery times.
