Indian Billionaire Offers New Home to Colombian Hippos

An Indian business magnate has offered to relocate approximately 80 hippos from Colombia to a private wildlife sanctuary in western India. This initiative, proposed by Anant Ambani, aims to prevent the culling of these animals, which are descendants of hippos originally imported by drug lord Pablo Escobar and have since become an invasive species in Colombia's Magdalena River basin.

The relocation plan involves transporting the hippos to Vantara, a 3,500-acre wildlife center in Jamnagar, Gujarat state, owned by Ambani's family.

Colombia's Environment Minister, Irene Vélez Torres, had previously announced a plan to cull at least 80 hippos later this year, following unsuccessful sterilization efforts to control the growing population, currently estimated at 200. The hippos pose a significant threat to the local ecosystem due to their invasive nature. Ambani's organization, Vantara, has expressed a commitment to animal welfare, stating a belief in protecting all life and proposing a "scientifically led translocation."

The proposed transfer requires the involvement of the Indian government and adherence to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulations. India has previously undertaken similar ventures, such as the reintroduction of African cheetahs in 2022.

While Vantara is described by its owners as an "animal rescue, rehabilitation and conservation center," some critics in India view it as a private zoo, questioning its conservation credentials regarding the reintroduction of animals into the wild.
