IDW starts Sonic road to issue 100

IDW Publishing said in an IGN News report published Oct. 12 that its Sonic the Hedgehog comic will reach issue #100 in 2027, launching a “Road to #100” promotion.

The campaign gives IDW a multi-issue runway for a licensed series heading toward a three-digit milestone, beginning with issue #94 in March 2027 after issue #91 arrives on Oct. 28.

Issue #94 starts a new mini arc focused on Surge and Kit, according to the IGN report. The comic is written by Daniel Barnes and Evan Stanley and drawn by Alex Forrest.

IGN said it exclusively debuted cover art for Sonic the Hedgehog #94 in a four-image preview gallery. The outlet also published a seven-image preview gallery for Sonic the Hedgehog #91, the issue scheduled to hit stores on Oct. 28.

The publisher’s solicitation for issue #94 places the story in Pinfall Prairie, a desert frontier town where fights in the wrestling ring decide disputes. Surge has gained status there with Kit nearby, before the town’s residents reveal trouble under Mama Stinkerton, their current leader, the solicitation said.

“The next mini arc on the Road to #100 starts here!” IDW said in the solicitation text published by IGN. The phrase suggests the publisher is treating the countdown as a staged promotional beat rather than waiting for issue #100 alone.

For Sonic readers, the immediate question is how much of the path to issue #100 will be used to spotlight supporting characters. The issue #94 solicitation centers Surge and Kit, not only Sonic, which gives IDW room to widen the cast before the milestone issue lands next year.

The business angle is straightforward: licensed comics often depend on steady visibility at local comic shops, and dated preorders help publishers and retailers gauge demand before release. IGN said readers can preorder both Sonic the Hedgehog #91 and issue #94 through local comic shops.

IGN also tied the Sonic news to other IDW announcements. The outlet said the publisher is preparing Godzilla Versus Everything, the first major crossover event for its Kai-Sei line, and that IDW revealed at NYCC that Grant Morrison will write a new James Bond comic.

IDW did not detail the plot, creative team or release date for Sonic the Hedgehog #100 in the IGN report. The next dated step is Sonic the Hedgehog #91 on Oct. 28, followed by issue #94 in March 2027.
