EU Lawmakers Push for Strict Enforcement of Deepfake Bans

A coalition of 119 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) is demanding robust enforcement mechanisms for upcoming EU regulations targeting AI-generated non-consensual sexual imagery. This initiative follows reports indicating that at least 50 MEPs, predominantly women, have been targeted by deepfake pornography. Data suggests female parliamentarians are 33 times more likely to be subjected to such content than their male counterparts.

Legislators argue that the prevalence of "nudification" software constitutes a systemic threat to democratic participation by deterring women from public office. The current regulatory framework, scheduled for implementation on December 2, faces criticism for potential gaps that may allow digital platforms to circumvent bans on AI-driven sexual exploitation tools.

Institutional concerns center on the ability of national authorities to effectively penalize technology providers that facilitate this form of digital violence. Policymakers are now prioritizing the closure of legal loopholes to ensure that the prohibition of these applications is enforceable across all member states.
