U.S. Job Growth Exceeds Expectations

The U.S. economy added 172,000 jobs in May, surpassing economist expectations of 105,000, driven primarily by the leisure and hospitality sector ahead of the World Cup. This increase, reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), indicates continued robust hiring activity across the nation.

Leisure and hospitality businesses accounted for 70,000 new positions in May, a significant rise from the average monthly increase of 14,000 over the preceding year. Within this sector, food and drink establishments contributed 48,000 jobs. Other sectors experiencing growth included local government and healthcare, while the financial sector observed a decline in employment. unemployment rate remained stable at 4.3%.

Additionally, job creation figures for March and April were revised upward by a combined 93,000, further illustrating the resilience of the U.S. labor market. This sustained job growth occurs amidst rising business costs.
