Pulitzer-Winning Historian Gordon Wood Dies at 92

Gordon S. Wood, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, died on Sunday after being struck by a car in a supermarket parking lot in East Providence, Rhode Island. Wood, 92, sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to them at Rhode Island Hospital. The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Wood was the Alva O. Way University Professor and professor of history emeritus at Brown University. He received the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1993 for his work, The Radicalization of the American Revolution . This book posited that the American Revolution was as much an internal social and political transformation as it was a movement for independence from colonial rule.

His extensive bibliography includes other notable works such as The Creation of the American Republic, 1776-1787 (1969), Empire of Liberty , and Revolutionary Characters . Wood was also a recipient of the 1970 Bancroft Prize and Humanities Medal, presented by President Barack Obama in 2011 for his contributions to understanding the nation's founding. His scholarship significantly influenced the interpretation of America's origin story in post-World War II historiography.
