GameStop Bids $55.5 Billion for eBay

GameStop Proposes $55.5 Billion Acquisition of eBay GameStop, the U.S. video game retailer, initiated an unsolicited takeover bid for e-commerce platform eBay on May 4, offering $55.5 billion. The proposal, valued at $125 per share split evenly between cash and stock, represents a significant move by GameStop, which held a market valuation of approximately $12 billion prior to the offer, compared to eBay's $46 billion.

GameStop's CEO, Ryan Cohen, who has accumulated a 5% stake in eBay, indicated that the bid could turn hostile if rejected by eBay's board. Cohen outlined a strategy to enhance eBay's value through a cost-cutting program targeting $2 billion in annual savings, specifically reducing sales and marketing by $1.2 billion, product development by $300 million, and administrative costs by $500 million.

He also proposed leveraging GameStop's 1,600 retail locations as authentication, fulfillment, and live commerce hubs for eBay.

The acquisition proposal is supported by a $20 billion bank loan from TD Securities, with potential for additional funding from external investors. This development follows eBay's recent first-quarter revenue of $3.09 billion, surpassing analyst estimates, and its ongoing acquisition of the secondhand fashion app Depop for approximately $1.2 billion.
