Firefighters deploy 6 units for Storm Adam search in Catalonia

Catalan firefighters deployed six units on Sunday to search for a woman missing after Storm Adam flooding in Cabrera de Mar, Sur in English reported in a news article on Oct. 18.

The case came as Aemet placed parts of Spain’s Mediterranean coast under red warnings, its maximum alert, after Atlas360 reported on Oct. 17 that forecasters warned rainfall could reach 300 litres per square metre.

The woman, reported to be about 40 and from Malgrat de Mar, disappeared on Saturday at about 7:30 p.m. in Cabrera de Mar, about 18 miles northeast of Barcelona. Sur in English reported that she had been trying to cross a watercourse with her daughter after the family returned from a town basketball court.

The girl’s father entered the water and rescued the child, while the woman was carried away, according to the report. Drones and police divers joined the search operation.

Cabrera de Mar Mayor Oscar Fernández said on Saturday: “A family attempted to cross the stream on foot. One of its members was swept away by the water, which was surging with great force due to the heavy rainfall. We have no further information at this time.”

Firefighters also said they rescued two elderly people trapped by floodwater inside a car in Sentmenat, a municipality inland from the coast, according to Sur in English.

The storm affected several regions along Spain’s Mediterranean side. Sur in English reported flooding in Málaga province, including El Palo, and said La Axarquía was placed on red alert early Sunday. Almería province also saw floodwater enter streets and garages, including in El Ejido.

Aemet warned in the report: “The meteorological danger is extraordinary. Property and vulnerable populations or in exposed areas could suffer very serious or catastrophic impacts.” A red warning was also in place Sunday for the south coast of Valencia and northern Alicante.
