Expansion of Enhanced Geothermal Energy Capacity and Market Scaling
Fervo Energy is scaling enhanced geothermal power through standardized drilling techniques and major data center partnerships, aiming to achieve cost parity…

Fervo Energy has initiated a strategy to scale enhanced geothermal power by utilizing horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to bypass traditional geological constraints. Following a $2.2 billion initial public offering in May 2026, the company is prioritizing the development of standardized 50-megawatt power units, termed GeoBlocks, to achieve economies of scale.
The firm is targeting a reduction in capital expenditure from $7,000 per kilowatt to $3,000 per kilowatt to achieve cost parity with natural gas generation. A primary driver for this expansion is the increasing energy demand from data center operators, evidenced by a multi-gigawatt development agreement with Google.
Operational risks remain regarding the replicability of the technology across diverse geological formations. While current projects in Nevada and Utah demonstrate technical viability, the company must prove that its drilling methods remain economically efficient in varied subsurface conditions. The firm aims to reach one gigawatt of operational capacity by 2030, with a long-term target of five gigawatts by 2035.
