Federal forces are fighting rebels across multiple fronts after the TPLF said it was in a "full blown" war and a seven-group coalition aims to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The coalition was declared earlier this week when Tigrayan rebels said they had formed an alliance with six other armed groups operating across the country; the TPLF said another group claimed to have joined on Friday.
If sustained, the reported coordination among armed groups could broaden the geographic scope of fighting, complicate military responses and constrain humanitarian access in affected areas.
Seven-group rebel coalition
The TPLF said the alliance’s objective is to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and described current operations as a "full blown" war. The statement is the principal source for the scale and intent of the coalition.
The coalition’s nationwide reach, if maintained, raises the risk that clashes will spread beyond traditional conflict zones and produce new internal displacement, cross-border movements and pressure on regional security mechanisms.
