European Union Imposes Visa Restrictions on Somalia

The European Union has implemented visa restrictions on Somali citizens, citing insufficient cooperation from Mogadishu regarding the repatriation of nationals residing in Europe illegally. The measures, approved by member states on Thursday, include the suspension of multiple-entry visas, the removal of fee waivers for diplomatic passport holders, and an extension of standard visa processing times from 15 to 45 days.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud challenged the policy, asserting that his government is willing to readmit citizens but requires verification to ensure returnees are indeed Somali nationals. Mohamud stated that previous return efforts included individuals who did not speak the Somali language, suggesting that some asylum seekers may be misrepresenting their origins to secure residency.

The European Commission initiated these sanctions following an assessment that deemed Somalia’s readmission cooperation inadequate. The restrictions, which have no fixed expiration date, serve as diplomatic leverage to compel compliance. This action follows similar EU measures previously applied to The Gambia and Ethiopia. The policy shift occurs as the European bloc intensifies its broader strategy to accelerate deportations and manage migration flows through external pressure on countries of origin.
