CJ 4DPLEX, a global provider of immersive cinema technologies, will install four new SCREENX auditoriums in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands by the end of 2026. This expansion follows an agreement with Pathé Cinémas, one of Europe's largest cinema operators, deepening a partnership that began with 4DX technology and later introduced SCREENX to Paris in 2018.
New Immersive Theaters Planned
The new installations include two locations in Belgium, one in France, and one in the Netherlands. This strategic move extends SCREENX's presence in key European markets, building on Pathé Cinémas' existing portfolio of 129 cinemas and 1,308 screens across eight countries, including France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
Pathé's European Market Position Pathé Cinémas holds a significant position in European Pathé Cinémas holds a significant position in European cinema exhibition, operating across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Tunisia, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Morocco. The company also contributes to European film production and distribution through its broader entertainment ventures. This partnership reinforces its commitment to premium cinematic experiences. SCREENX Technology Enhances Viewing SCREENX technology projects film content onto the auditorium's side walls, creating a 270-degree panoramic display. This immersive format extends visuals beyond the main screen, aiming to enhance key scenes and engage audiences more deeply. The technology integrates with a director's vision, offering a distinct viewing experience.
Market Expansion and Industry Trends New Immersive Theaters Planned The expansion into these European markets reflects a broader industry trend towards premium cinema formats. Exhibitors seek to differentiate the out-of-home moviegoing experience. CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of Korea's CJ Group, aims to standardize immersive storytelling in cinema globally, collaborating with exhibitors across the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Future Outlook for Premium Cinema If consumer demand for differentiated entertainment experiences continues to grow, this expansion could increase revenue for both CJ 4DPLEX and Pathé Cinémas. This might encourage further investment in immersive technologies across the global macro picture. For Pathé, the new SCREENX locations could attract a younger demographic and command higher ticket prices, bolstering its market share in competitive European markets. The wider cinema industry might see accelerated adoption of similar premium formats, as other exhibitors seek to match these immersive offerings, driving innovation in projection and auditorium design. Conversely, if economic pressures or shifts in consumer habits reduce discretionary spending on cinema, the return on investment for these high-cost installations could be slower than anticipated, impacting the profitability of both companies and potentially slowing the broader rollout of premium formats across the industry.
