Burnham to join Gogglebox in first for British prime minister

Andy Burnham is due to join Channel 4's Gogglebox at No. 10 on Friday, becoming the first British prime minister on the programme, a Guardian news article reported Oct. 22.

The charity episode links Downing Street to a prominent British entertainment format and supports Stand Up To Cancer, which has raised more than £127 million to date, according to the report.

Burnham will appear with Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool city region, described in the report as a close friend. The episode also includes the pop group Sugababes and comedian Joe Lycett.

Channel 4 said: “Nothing is off limits as Gogglebox continues to celebrate the simple joy of watching television together. They’ll be sharing hilarious, honest and often unexpected reactions to the week’s biggest television moments as well as poignant stories, all in aid of Stand Up To Cancer.”

The trailer introduces Burnham and Rotheram as “good friends Andy and Steve” and includes Burnham offering crisps. The Guardian reported that the pair discuss snacks, with Rotheram bringing Quavers and Burnham offering Skips, pork scratchings, Twiglets or bacon fries.

No. 10 said Burnham had a longstanding commitment to supporting charities, continuing work from his time as Greater Manchester mayor. A source close to Burnham told The Guardian he liked Gogglebox and had enjoyed watching it.

The appearance follows a 2017 episode featuring Jeremy Corbyn, then Labour leader, who discussed coddled eggs while watching a Nigella Lawson programme. Stand Up To Cancer is a national fundraising campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, funding 73 clinical trials and research projects involving more than 13,000 cancer patients.

More celebrity participants are to be announced. The special airs on Channel 4 at 9.05 p.m. on Friday.
