BIS Sponsors Student Visits to Jammu Exhibition

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office sponsored educational visits for 635 students from 25 BIS Standard Clubs to the three-day “Gatisheel Jammu & Kashmir 2.0” exhibition in Jammu. This initiative aimed to provide practical exposure to government operations and underscore the importance of quality standards.

Students Gain Practical Industry Exposure

The program targeted students from schools across the Jammu region, including those from remote and hilly areas. Participants gained insights into various government departments, public sector undertakings, and other participating organizations. On the exhibition's final day, 254 students from nine Standard Clubs attended.

Gold Testing and Hallmarking Insights

As part of their visits, students toured the Jammu and Kashmir Branch Laboratory (JKBL). There, they learned about gold testing processes, XRF technology, assaying, parting, and hallmarking. BIS officials stated these visits supplement classroom learning with real-world experience, emphasizing quality and safety standards.

Promoting Quality Consciousness

Saaqib Raahi, Scientist-C and Deputy Director of BIS JKBO, engaged with visitors and students at the BIS stall. He explained the Bureau’s work in standardization, conformity assessment, and consumer awareness. Member of Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma also visited the stall, commending BIS efforts to foster quality consciousness among young people.

Understanding BIS Certification

Standard Promotion Officer Ashish Dwivedi and Consultant Sumit Kashyap provided information on BIS certification, the ISI Mark, hallmarking, and the BIS Care App. They highlighted the critical role of standards in ensuring product quality, safety, reliability, and sustainability across various sectors.

Broader Impact on Education and Industry

The exposure visits allowed students to interact with representatives from diverse organizations, offering a glimpse into various products, technologies, services, and developmental initiatives. This direct engagement aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, potentially influencing future career choices and fostering a generation more aware of quality benchmarks.

Future Engagement and Standardization

The program's success suggests a potential model for future educational outreach by regulatory bodies. If similar initiatives expand, they could significantly enhance public understanding of quality control and standardization processes. Conversely, if such programs remain limited, the broader impact on consumer awareness and industry standards might be constrained, leaving a gap in practical education for many students.
