Dutch Museum Recovers Stolen Artifacts

Dutch authorities said an ancient golden helmet and two golden bracelets have been recovered in the Netherlands, around 14 months after they were stolen from the Drents Museum in Assen. The objects date to the fifth century B.C. and originated from Romania, officials said.

Officials said the items were returned after an agreement was reached with individuals accused of the theft. Prosecutors helped secure the handover ahead of a trial scheduled for this month, though authorities did not disclose the terms of the arrangement.

The recovered pieces include the golden helmet of Cotofenesti, which officials said weighs over two pounds, along with two golden bracelets. Authorities said the objects were crafted by the Dacian people. A third golden bracelet that was taken in the same theft remains missing, officials said, and the investigation is continuing.

Authorities said the helmet suffered minor damage but is considered fully restorable, while the two recovered bracelets are in perfect condition. Officials also confirmed the recovered artifacts will be returned to Romania.

The theft occurred on January 25, 2025, when the artifacts were stolen in an explosive-assisted heist at the Drents Museum, officials said. At the time, the items were on loan from the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest, according to authorities.

In a separate financial detail, officials said the National Museum of History of Romania previously received an insurance payout of 5.7 million euros (approximately $6.6 million) for the four stolen artifacts. The recovery of three of the four objects and the continued search for the remaining bracelet keep the case active for both law enforcement and cultural institutions involved in cross-border loans.

What remains uncertain is when, or whether, the missing bracelet will be found, and what specific conditions were attached to the agreement that led to the return of the recovered items. Authorities have not provided those details, and the case is still moving toward the scheduled court proceedings this month.
