Airlines Get Leeway Amid UK Fuel Crunch

UK Airlines Gain Flexibility for Fuel Shortages The United Kingdom government has implemented new contingency plans allowing airlines to cancel flights weeks in advance due to potential fuel shortages without forfeiting valuable take-off and landing slots. This measure, announced on Sunday, aims to prevent disruptive last-minute cancellations for passengers during the upcoming summer travel season.

Under the new framework, airlines can temporarily return unused slots while retaining the right to utilize them in the subsequent year. This adjustment to the Airports Slot Allocation Regulations 2025, which typically require 80% slot utilization to prevent forfeiture, enables carriers to proactively modify schedules. The government's objective is to provide airlines with the tools to adjust flights in advance, thereby reducing passenger inconvenience.

The initiative responds to warnings from the International Energy Agency regarding potential jet fuel shortages in Europe by June, particularly if Middle Eastern supplies are disrupted. The UK imports approximately 65% of its jet fuel. While airlines currently report no supply issues, the government has also requested UK refineries to maximize jet fuel production and is exploring increased supplies from the United States, including the potential use of US-specification Jet A fuel.
