OpenAI Buys Bankrupt Biotech Data to Train Medical AI

The OpenAI Foundation has launched the Data for Public Health initiative, allocating funding to secure proprietary biological and clinical datasets for artificial intelligence training. A primary project involves acquiring regulatory filings and safety data from bankrupt biotechnology firms to improve AI performance in drug development and regulatory navigation.

This initiative includes a $500,000 grant to the advocacy group 1Day Sooner to facilitate the purchase of clinical trial data. Additional funding of $40 million has been directed toward cancer vaccine research and drug effect prediction models at academic and research institutions.

The foundation, which holds a 26% equity stake in the for-profit OpenAI, is scaling its grantmaking operations with a target of distributing $1 billion by year-end. This strategy highlights a shift toward addressing data scarcity as a critical bottleneck in medical AI development.

The acquisition of corporate data through bankruptcy proceedings raises potential governance and privacy concerns regarding the handling of proprietary information. Similar data-acquisition strategies by other technology firms have previously faced public and regulatory scrutiny over the exposure of sensitive corporate records.
