Rwanda has finalized a 10-year agreement to host an annual Formula 1 Grand Prix beginning in the early 2030s. The project centers on a new circuit currently under development in Bugesera, integrated into a broader infrastructure initiative that includes a new international airport and commercial facilities.
This development represents a strategic shift in the sport’s geographic footprint, targeting an untapped market of approximately 100 million people. Unlike previous unsuccessful bids from other African nations, Rwanda secured the contract by presenting a unified financial plan backed by a mix of public and private investment.
Financing for the project is linked to a five-year national economic strategy aiming to attract £3.5 billion in private capital. While the government positions the event as a catalyst for tourism and GDP growth, the selection remains subject to international scrutiny regarding the country’s human rights record and ongoing regional diplomatic tensions.
The project’s long-term viability will depend on the successful execution of the associated infrastructure and the ability to maintain consistent private sector funding over the next decade.
