Afghanistan Launches Air Strikes Into Pakistan

Afghanistan’s defense ministry confirmed on Friday that its forces conducted air strikes against targets within Pakistan on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in regional hostilities. The operation targeted locations in Pakistan’s Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, which Kabul identified as bases for armed groups and hostile intelligence operations.

The strikes represent a shift in the ongoing border conflict, as Kabul claims the action was a necessary measure to neutralize threats to its national security. While Afghanistan possesses limited air capabilities, including helicopters and drones, the ministry stated it would utilize all available means to eliminate perceived threats at their source. Pakistan’s Information Ministry has reportedly rejected the claims of the strikes, maintaining its stance that Kabul harbors militants responsible for attacks within Pakistani territory.

This development further destabilizes a fragile security environment characterized by frequent cross-border skirmishes. Previous attempts at mediation, including efforts led by China, have failed to establish a lasting ceasefire. The United Nations reported that violence along the border resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties during the first quarter of 2026, and this latest offensive action threatens to collapse remaining diplomatic channels between the two nations.
