Zelenskyy Urges NATO Integration Based on Defensive Capabilities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy advocated for Ukraine's NATO accession during a defense industry forum in Ankara, Turkey, on Tuesday. Zelenskyy argued that Ukraine’s combat experience and industrial development, including the successful deployment of long-range drones and missile systems, provide a strategic asset that would strengthen the alliance. He emphasized that Ukraine has effectively eliminated Russia's strategic rear by striking targets as far as Siberia, while maintaining a 90 percent interception rate for Shahed drones.

The push for membership comes as the conflict enters its fifth year, with Russian forces currently advancing at a rate of 3.79 square kilometers per day, a significant decline from previous periods. Despite these gains, Ukraine faces critical shortages in anti-ballistic missile defenses. Zelenskyy called for European nations to develop independent production capabilities for anti-ballistic systems, noting that U.S. Patriot interceptor stocks have been depleted by regional conflicts in the Middle East.

While NATO members have committed to increasing defense spending to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2035, major allies remain hesitant to admit a nation currently engaged in active conflict with a nuclear-armed state. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss potential mediation efforts and the future of the war, as the alliance navigates the intersection of industrial expansion and geopolitical security constraints.
