Shreveport Tragedy: Eight Children Dead in Shooting

A mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday left eight children dead after what officials described as a domestic dispute escalated into violence. Authorities said the incident began at about 05:55 CDT (11:55 GMT) and involved a father, Shamar Elkins, who fatally shot children before a confrontation with police.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said officers encountered the suspect and a gun battle followed. Elkins died at the scene, Smith said, but officials have not determined whether his death was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire. The weapon used was described by authorities as an “assault-style weapon.”

Officials said two adult women, including the children’s mother, were wounded by gunfire and were recovering in a hospital. Authorities also said a woman and a ninth child escaped by jumping from a rooftop; both were reported to be in stable condition.

The victims were identified as three boys and five girls ranging in age from 3 to 11. Authorities named the children as Jayla Elkins (3), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), and Braylon Snow (5). Officials said seven of the children killed were the suspect’s own.

Authorities said the violence unfolded across two locations. After the initial attack, officials said the gunman went to a second home, where he abducted three children before police intercepted him. Investigators said they have not established a motive.

Officials noted the suspect had a criminal history and was reportedly in the process of a divorce. Authorities said he had a court appearance scheduled for Monday. The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s office also pointed to the timing of the incident, saying it occurred shortly after the opening of a new domestic violence center in the city.

The case adds to renewed attention on domestic-violence-related risks and the role of law enforcement response in fast-moving incidents involving children.
