Yemen Appoints First Female Foreign Minister

Afrah al-Zouba has been appointed as Yemen’s foreign minister, marking the first time a woman has held the position or any prominent cabinet post in the country. The appointment, announced Thursday, follows her tenure as minister for planning and international cooperation and signals a shift in the government's administrative leadership during a period of renewed regional instability.

Al-Zouba’s career spans over 25 years, transitioning from community health and development work with organizations like USAID to high-level government advisory roles. She gained national prominence during the 2011 revolution, serving as the first deputy secretary-general of Dialogue Conference, where she oversaw efforts to draft a new constitution and transition the state following the departure of Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Her appointment occurs as the Yemeni government attempts to consolidate anti-Houthi forces and re-establish territorial control amid escalating violence. While critics have questioned her lack of traditional diplomatic experience, her background in peacebuilding and donor-facing aid absorption is expected to be central to her mandate.

Al-Zouba will now lead the government’s diplomatic outreach to the United Nations and Western partners as the state seeks to navigate a potential return to full-scale conflict.
