An elderly woman was brought out of a frontline village in Ukraine with the help of a ground robot, according to Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps.
Officials said Ukrainian forces first located the woman using a drone and then sent an unmanned ground vehicle to reach her position. Video shared by the 3rd Army Corps on Saturday showed the robot moving toward the woman with a message written on it: “grandma, sit down.”
Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps releases footage of the rescue
The woman was identified as Antonina Horuzha. In remarks included with the account of the incident, she said she felt relief and believed she did not have the strength to get out on her own.
The 3rd Army Corps described the rescue as taking place recently in a village on Ukraine’s frontline. The footage and accompanying description did not provide additional details about the exact location or the date beyond the Saturday release.
Ground drones expand beyond combat roles on the frontlines
Officials said ground drones have been used on Ukraine’s frontlines not only for evacuations and rescue missions, but also to deliver supplies to personnel operating in contested areas. The rescue of Horuzha was presented as one example of that broader use.
The incident underscores how robotic systems are being adapted for tasks that reduce direct exposure for human responders in dangerous environments. In this case, the sequence described by officials combined aerial surveillance to find a civilian with a ground robot to complete the extraction.
Humanitarian use of robotics in conflict zones
The 3rd Army Corps framed the operation as a humanitarian application of technology in an active conflict zone. The video showed the robot approaching close enough for the woman to follow its instruction to sit, indicating the device was used as a physical means of assistance rather than only for observation.
At the same time, key elements remain unclear based on the information released, including how long Horuzha had been in the area, what immediate threats were present, and what medical support was required after she was moved.
The account adds to public documentation of how unmanned systems are being integrated into frontline operations in Ukraine, including scenarios involving civilians who may be unable to evacuate without help.
