U.S. soccer star Christian Pulisic was substituted at halftime during the team's 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opening match in Los Angeles on Friday. Pulisic stated that his removal was a precautionary measure after receiving a knock to his left calf area during the first half. The incident occurred at SoFi Stadium, where the U.S. secured three points to lead Group D.
Pulisic, 27, an AC Milan forward, contributed an assist and helped create an own for Paraguay before his substitution. Both Pulisic and coach Mauricio Pochettino indicated that the decision to remove him was to avoid exacerbating the injury. The U.S. team is scheduled to play Australia next on Friday in Seattle, followed by Turkiye on June 25 in Los Angeles.
The U.S. win places them at the top of Group D, with Paraguay at the bottom. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage, which commences with the round of 32.
