Officials said the United States warned of rapid escalation across West Asia after the Houthi movement fired a ballistic missile toward Riyadh; officials added that markets could react, notably oil, defense equities and safe-haven assets.
Riyadh missile strike
Officials said the projectile was a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh and that U.S. agencies were monitoring the trajectory and any follow-up strikes. Officials did not immediately release casualty figures or a claim of responsibility.
Officials warned that a further exchange could have immediate market and security effects. They said any sustained campaign of cross-border attacks would raise the risk of supply disruptions and higher insurance and security costs for shipping, and could boost demand for crude and safe-haven assets.
Watch for responses through Sept. 22. Officials said capitals and markets will be watching for retaliatory military moves, formal diplomatic protests or sanctions steps over the next 48 hours; those outcomes would determine near-term pressure on oil, defense stocks and sovereign risk premiums.
