United States forces conducted a second consecutive night of air strikes against Iranian military targets on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in regional hostilities. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported targeting approximately 90 sites across Iran, following an initial wave of 80 strikes on Wednesday. The military action, which has resulted in at least 14 confirmed fatalities and 78 injuries, follows Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week.
The strikes represent a breakdown of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two nations in June. Washington has responded to the maritime incidents by revoking a sanctions waiver on Iranian oil, further straining diplomatic channels. The U.S. military stated the objective is to degrade Iran's capacity to threaten commercial shipping, while Iranian officials have condemned the strikes as a pretext for broader aggression, citing damage to civilian infrastructure including railway bridges and potential medical facilities.
The conflict has disrupted global maritime traffic, with the International Maritime Organization reporting approximately 6,000 sailors currently stranded near the Strait of Hormuz. While U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the current memorandum is effectively void, he has left the possibility of future negotiations open. The situation remains volatile as Iran has initiated retaliatory strikes against U.S. military assets located in neighboring Gulf states.
