U.S. Orders Anthropic AI Access Ban
The U.S. government has ordered artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to disable access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all foreign nationals, effective June 13, 2026. This directive, citing national security concerns, impacts both foreign nationals abroad and those residing within the United States, including Anthropic employees.
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, stated it received the order at 5:21 PM GMT on Friday. The company indicated that the government's letter did not provide detailed explanations for the specific security concerns. The Mythos 5 model is recognized for its capability to identify software vulnerabilities, a feature previously utilized by U.S. authorities and select companies for cybersecurity enhancements. The recently released Fable 5 model, based on Mythos technology, has its cybersecurity and biotechnology functionalities restricted.
Anthropic expressed disagreement with the broad access restriction, noting that similar capabilities exist in models from other providers, such as OpenAI's GPT-5.5. The company highlighted that Fable 5's safety measures have undergone extensive testing. Earlier in June, Anthropic had advocated for a coordinated pause in advanced AI development, citing concerns about the rapid progression of the technology and potential loss of human control.
