Oral GLP-1 Drug Shows Efficacy in Type 2 Diabetes and Weight Loss

A new oral GLP-1 medication, elecoglipron, demonstrated a 10.5% average body weight reduction and improved blood glucose levels in a Phase 2b clinical trial. This development offers an alternative to injectable GLP-1 treatments currently available.

The trial involved 406 adults with type 2 diabetes across nine countries. Nearly 90% of participants receiving the drug achieved the target HbA1c level of 7%, compared to approximately 25% in the placebo group.

Additionally, 72% of participants achieved at least a 5% weight reduction. The safety and tolerability profile of elecoglipron was consistent with other GLP-1 medications at this stage of development.

This oral formulation could expand patient access to GLP-1 therapies, particularly for individuals averse to injections. However, oral GLP-1 drugs typically require daily administration, contrasting with the weekly schedule of some injectable counterparts.

Further Phase 3 trials are required to confirm the drug's long-term efficacy and safety. The expansion of oral GLP-1 options may influence market dynamics and treatment paradigms for type 2 diabetes and obesity.
