Belgian authorities state their approach is based on scientific advice, prioritizing screening and controls at departure points in affected countries. They also confirm preparedness to quarantine and treat symptomatic arrivals.

Reports indicate the US had urged European countries to adopt stricter travel restrictions, similar to its own, and warned of potential US entry bans for non-compliant nations. The US previously imposed entry bans on non-citizens from Ebola-affected Central African countries, deviating from World Health Organization guidance.

Belgian officials have attributed some responsibility for the current health crisis to past US reductions in development cooperation and medical aid. The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency over the Ebola outbreak in May, with confirmed cases in the DRC approaching 600.
