Poundland Prepares for Insolvency Placing 12,000 Jobs at Risk
Poundland faces administration after a failed takeover, putting 12,000 jobs at risk as the retailer searches for buyers to save its 600-store chain.

Poundland is preparing to file a notice of intention to appoint administrators, a move that will trigger a 10-day moratorium on creditor action. This insolvency process follows the rejection of a takeover bid from the Martin Property Group by the retailer’s owner, Gordon Brothers. The collapse of these negotiations has placed approximately 12,000 jobs and 600 retail locations under immediate operational uncertainty.
Advisers from AlixPartners have been appointed to manage the insolvency proceedings and evaluate potential acquisition offers. Several entities, including CDS Superstores, Fortress, and Modella, have expressed interest in acquiring segments of the business. The retailer had previously undergone a restructuring program involving the closure of over 100 stores to stabilize its financial position.
The failure to secure a sale highlights ongoing volatility within the UK discount retail sector. Stakeholders are now focused on whether a partial or full acquisition can be finalized during the upcoming administration window to mitigate further systemic disruption.
