Third Shillong Book Fair Opens with 80 Publishers

The third Shillong Book Fair opened today at the State Central Library, featuring over 80 stalls from publishers nationwide. Book Trust (NBT) of India, in collaboration with local Arts and Culture and Education departments, organized the seven-day event, running from September 25 to October 1.

NBT Expands Literary Access

Book Trust, operating under the Ministry of Education, aims to broaden literature access across India. This fair connects readers with diverse titles, including those in various Indian languages and genres. Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai inaugurated the event.

Diverse Literary Offerings Displayed Participating publishers include Sonalika Publications The fair offers books spanning fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, educational materials, regional writing, spirituality, and self-development. Participating publishers include Sonalika Publications, specializing in children's educational content, and JK Yog, featuring Swami Mukundananda's works on mind management. Literature from Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region is prominently displayed alongside national publications. Local Authors Engage Readers Shillong’s literary community is well-represented, with local authors like Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, a poet and fiction writer in Khasi and English, associated with the fair. His notable works include The Distaste of the Earth and Funeral Nights. The event also includes literary programs and activities for children and young readers, mirroring previous editions.

Fair Builds on Past Success This year's fair follows the 2024 edition This year's fair follows the 2024 edition, which hosted approximately 100 stalls at the same venue, featuring book launches, panel discussions, storytelling, workshops, and career counseling. The 2023 event marked Shillong's first book fair in seven years. Organizers anticipate the fair will again provide a crucial platform for publishers and writers to engage with Shillong's reading public. Regional Literary Engagement Outlook If attendance matches or exceeds previous years, the fair could solidify Shillong's role as a significant literary hub in Northeast India, potentially attracting more national publishers and fostering local talent.
