Tesco UK Sales Growth Slows Significantly

Tesco, the United Kingdom's largest retailer, reported a 1.8 percent increase in comparable UK sales for the three months ending in May, a decline from the 4.2 percent growth recorded in the previous quarter. The results, which fell short of the 2.3 percent growth anticipated by market analysts, reflect a broader cooling in consumer spending as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East drive volatility in fuel prices.

The deceleration in growth is attributed to a combination of dampened consumer confidence and unfavorable year-over-year comparisons against an exceptionally warm spring period in 2023. While overall group sales rose 1 percent to 16.8 billion pounds, the performance was bolstered by an 8.9 percent increase in online sales. Conversely, the company's Booker wholesale division experienced a 3.2 percent decline in sales, signaling persistent pressure on independent retailers and the catering sector.

Tesco maintains its full-year profit guidance, with market expectations currently set at 3.25 billion pounds. To mitigate competitive pressures, the retailer has expanded its price-matching initiative with discounters to over 2,000 stores. Despite these strategic adjustments, shares fell 2.4 percent in early trading as investors weighed the impact of macroeconomic uncertainty on future retail margins.
