Ecuador Gang Leader Killed in Guayaquil

Suspected gang leader Carlos Alberto Suástegui Villanueva was killed Wednesday in a targeted shooting outside the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Two suspects, both teenagers, were detained by local authorities following the attack, which occurred as the victim exited the arrivals terminal.

The incident involved two assailants disguised with flowers and stuffed toys, who approached the 39-year-old leader of the Los Águilas gang before firing at point-blank range. The attack resulted in one additional injury to a bystander and forced a two-hour closure of the airport facility for forensic investigation. The victim was identified by the interior ministry as a key figure in a group designated as a terrorist organization by the state.

This assassination follows the declaration of a state of emergency across 10 provinces, including Guayas, by President Daniel Noboa. The mechanism of violence is driven by territorial disputes over drug trafficking corridors between Colombia and Peru. Despite the deployment of 75,000 security personnel, the nation continues to experience record-high homicide rates as criminal factions challenge state authority. The persistence of such high-profile violence suggests that current emergency measures have yet to disrupt the operational capacity of organized crime syndicates within major transit hubs.
