Super Mario Galaxy Movie , produced by Illumination and Universal, delivered a $372.5 million global box office total in its opening weekend as of April 5, 2026, according to the companies’ reported figures. The result makes it the biggest global opening of 2026 so far and ranks as the fifth-largest global opening ever for an animated film.
The launch was driven by a wide international rollout. The film opened across 80 territories, playing in more than 23,500 locations and on 54,000 screens, generating $182.4 million from international markets. In the U.S. and Canada, the movie brought in $190 million over a five-day period running from Wednesday through Easter, including $130.9 million from the Friday-to-Sunday portion of that window.
Within Nintendo’s film adaptations, the opening places the new release as the second-highest-grossing debut in the franchise. It trails 2023’s Super Mario Bros. , which posted $387.8 million globally. The comparison underscores how closely the new title’s initial demand tracked the earlier installment, while still falling short of that benchmark.
On the domestic calendar, the five-day U.S./Canada start ranks fourth among the biggest five-day openings cited for the market. The titles ahead of it are Moana 2 at $225.4 million, the 2023 Super Mario Bros Movie at $204.6 million, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at $200 million. The companies also noted that the Friday-to-Sunday figure of $130.9 million sits within the larger five-day total of $190 million, reflecting the impact of the midweek-to-holiday corridor.
The performance also extends a franchise-level milestone for animated releases tied to the Nintendo property. The Mario animated series is described as the only animated franchise with two titles opening above $350 million globally and two titles opening above $170 million internationally. That record highlights repeatable turnout across both North American and overseas markets, supported by large-scale distribution and broad screen availability.
What remains unclear from the available figures is how the opening will translate into longer-run box office durability across regions, including whether international markets will hold at similar strength after the initial weekend. Additional updates on week-to-week performance, regional splits beyond the international aggregate, and any changes in screen counts would further clarify the film’s trajectory.
