Amnesty Report Details RSF War Crimes

Amnesty International released a report Wednesday documenting crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing committed by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during the siege of el-Fasher, Sudan. The findings detail an 18-month campaign characterized by systematic murder, sexual violence, and the deliberate targeting of non-Arab ethnic groups, particularly the Zaghawa community. The report, which incorporates satellite imagery and testimony from over 200 survivors, identifies specific RSF commanders responsible for violations of international law. According to United Nations data, the assault on el-Fasher resulted in more than 6,000 deaths within a three-day period, contributing to a broader national crisis that has displaced 14 million people and left 28 million facing acute hunger.

The mechanism of the violence involved the systematic use of ethnic slurs and targeted attacks on civilians, which investigators suggest may meet the legal threshold for genocide. While the RSF leadership has previously denied allegations of widespread atrocities, the documentation provides a granular account of human rights abuses, including the forced recruitment and abduction of children.

This escalation marks a critical shift in the three-year power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces. The findings increase international pressure for an immediate ceasefire and the potential deployment of an international protection force to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Darfur region.
