The European Investment Bank and the World Health Organization have finalized a €10 million grant agreement to stabilize public health infrastructure in Lebanon. The funding is designated for the reconstruction of the Central Public Health Laboratory, a critical facility for national disease surveillance and diagnostic capacity.
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative allocates resources to secure the supply chain for essential medications. This intervention targets the treatment of chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, for an estimated 50,000 patients.
The project addresses significant systemic vulnerabilities in Lebanon’s healthcare sector, which has faced severe operational constraints due to ongoing economic and political instability. By restoring centralized laboratory functions, the agreement aims to mitigate risks associated with diagnostic gaps and pharmaceutical shortages in the region.
