Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations Amid Rising Fuel Costs Spirit Airlines, a U.S. budget carrier, ceased all flight operations and initiated an “orderly wind-down” effective Saturday, May 2, 2026. This action follows the airline's inability to secure additional funding amidst significantly increased jet fuel costs, primarily driven by the war with Iran, and other operational pressures.

The airline's shutdown impacts thousands of scheduled flights and employees. Spirit Airlines stated that all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available. The company advised passengers not to travel to airports and directed them to a dedicated website for refund information. Refunds for flights purchased directly with a credit or debit card will be processed automatically, while those who booked through travel agents must request refunds via their agents.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Sean Duffy, has responded by encouraging credit card chargebacks for affected passengers.

Additionally, major airlines including United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest have agreed to cap ticket prices for Spirit customers needing to rebook canceled flights and are exploring opportunities to absorb Spirit's former staff and increase capacity on previously served routes. Spirit Airlines had previously filed for bankruptcy twice within the last year, with a proposed merger with JetBlue being blocked in 2024 on antitrust grounds.
