Cruise Ship Evacuates Passengers Amid Hantavirus Scare
Three suspected hantavirus patients were evacuated from a cruise ship to the Netherlands following an outbreak on board.

Three individuals suspected of hantavirus infection were evacuated from a cruise ship to the Netherlands on Monday, May 6. The patients were aboard the MV Hondius, operated by the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions, which was sailing from South America to Cape Verde. This evacuation follows a confirmed hantavirus outbreak on the same vessel, which has resulted in at least one fatality.
The suspected cases were identified during the ship's voyage, prompting the medical transfer. The specific strain of hantavirus involved is the Andes strain, which is known to be transmissible between humans. The incident highlights the challenges of managing infectious disease outbreaks in confined environments such as cruise ships, particularly when dealing with pathogens with human-to-human transmission potential.
Dutch health authorities are coordinating the medical response and investigation into the outbreak's origin and spread. The evacuation aims to provide specialized medical care for the suspected patients and to mitigate further transmission risks on board the vessel and upon its arrival at port.
