Malian Army Retakes Anefis Following Clashes

Malian military forces regained control of the northern town of Anefis on Friday following a week of intense combat against separatist and militant groups. Army Chief General Jean Elysee Dao confirmed that approximately 30 soldiers were killed and 60 others wounded during the operation to reclaim the strategic position, located 100 kilometers from the rebel-held city of Kidal.

The offensive follows a series of coordinated attacks initiated on July 4 by Tuareg separatists and fighters affiliated with al-Qaeda. These groups had seized the town as part of a broader campaign to challenge government authority in northern Mali. The military operation involved government troops supported by allied Russian paramilitary forces, who faced significant resistance from the Azawad Liberation Front and its associates.

The recapture of Anefis marks a volatile escalation in the decade-long security crisis facing the military-led government. The region remains contested as insurgent factions continue to target state infrastructure and military outposts. The government's ability to maintain control over northern territories remains under pressure as these armed groups seek to establish independent governance in the region.
