Smithsonian's Oldest Building Reopens for Brief Exhibition

The venerable Smithsonian Castle reopens its doors on the National Mall, welcoming visitors after an extensive closure. This temporary reopening offers a unique opportunity to explore historical exhibits and enjoy new culinary offerings in Washington D.C.'s iconic landmark.

Scheduled from May 22 to September 7, the re-engagement coincides with broader Smithsonian initiatives celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Several key institutions are undergoing revitalizations, contributing to an enhanced visitor experience along the south side of the Mall.

Revitalizing Historic Landmarks

Beyond the Castle, designed by Gothic Revival architect James Renwick Jr. and first opened in 1855, other significant sites are also returning to public access. The Smithsonian carousel, a beloved attraction, resumed operations in late April following a comprehensive restoration.

Additionally, the Arts and Industries Building, the institution's second-oldest structure, is set to reopen on June 16. This historic space will host public programming, Folklife Festival displays, and a vibrant marketplace until September 7, offering diverse cultural experiences in the heart of the city.

"American Aspirations" Exhibit Unveiled

Visitors to the Smithsonian Castle can immerse themselves in the newly restored Great Hall and experience the "American Aspirations" exhibition. Running from June 2 to July 26, this co-curated display features an impressive collection of artifacts pivotal to the nation's journey.

Among the treasures are Thomas Jefferson's actual writing desk, Amelia Earhart's iconic flight suit, and a detailed model of the Statue of Liberty. Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch played a key role in curating this insightful exhibit, which underscores foundational American ideals and progress.

Enhanced Dining Experiences

A notable addition to the Castle's reopening is the Summer Shack, a new cafe enhancing the National Mall's culinary scene. Operating daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, the cafe offers a taste of New England with items like lobster rolls, spiced shrimp rolls, and classic chowder.

Complementing these options are chili dogs, whoopie pies, and refreshing strawberry-mango coolers. The Summer Shack provides both in-house seating within the historic Castle and convenient grab-and-go options for those exploring the surrounding Mall.
