Gaza Tech Incubator Rebuilds Amidst Conflict
A technology incubator in Gaza, affiliated with the University College of Applied Sciences (UCAS), is initiating a recovery plan following extensive damage sustained during the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The UCAS Technology Incubator, located in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of southwestern Gaza City, had its headquarters and facilities destroyed in August 2024 due to Israeli attacks targeting the college. This destruction has severely impacted Gaza's technology and entrepreneurship sector, which previously supported thousands of graduates.
Prior to the conflict, the incubator, established 13 years ago, supported over 500 young tech professionals and hosted dozens of projects across information technology, food manufacturing, commerce, and creative industries. It featured 13 specialized facilities, including training halls and co-working spaces, funded by grants from entities such as the European Union, Qatar, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 were provided to assist startups.
A field assessment of 100 startups in Gaza conducted by the incubator revealed that 80% of their headquarters were completely destroyed, and an additional 15.7% suffered severe damage, rendering over 95% of operational environments unworkable without comprehensive reconstruction. Furthermore, nearly 23% of workers in these projects have left Gaza. Despite these losses, the incubator has launched a recovery plan to restore core programs and establish new workspaces, aiming to include over 100 beneficiaries in its initial phase. This includes operating from a rented location in Gaza City to continue projects like "e-Lancer," which focuses on tech capacity-building.
